About

Mogul & the Prawn is Alexandra Benedict (the Mogul) and Tris Taylor (the Prawn).

We compose quirky, edgy and beautiful music for film and TV.

We live in Hastings.

Hastings in the snow

Our studio is in an underground lair beneath this park bench.*

We like a cup of tea and a biscuit, frequently.

We arrived in Hastings in 2002 with no contacts, no equipment, and proper jobs. Since then we’ve formed bands, had radio play on XFM and Radio 1, played indie and electronic music live in the UK and abroad, started two record labels, had remixes playlisted in major clubs, composed soundtracks for films that have premiered at Cannes and other film festivals, signed a songwriting contract with Cooking Vinyl Music, and visited Los Angeles to pitch music to US network TV shows. We have just finished writing all the music for a big new Channel 4 cookery programme and are currently working on each other’s solo albums.

We got our earliest commissions to score films because the directors liked our band The Black Tulips or our solo music under various aliases.

The Mogul is alternately shy and exhibitionist. The shy part makes her reclusive. She grew up loving film and studied film music for her MA.  Wrote her first musical aged 4, trained in ballet for 11 years and fronted a band described as ‘utterly, utterly glorious’ by Drowned in Sound. Has an extraordinary voice. Co-scripted a prize-winning feature film and got her first Musical Director credit in 2006. An expert in character development, narrative arc, thematic coherence and the career of Morrissey.

The Prawn is alternately exhibitionist and shy (whichever of the two the Mogul is not being at the time). Classically trained since age 4 but emotionally wedded to Bob Marley. Has the memory of a goldfish. Thinks TV themes are the business and Play Your Cards Right is SIMPLY THE BEST. Producer of punk, drill & bass, electro, garage rock, breakbeat, trip hop and indie pop records. Special skill: taking a single moment of film and getting right to the nub of the emotion.

We love composing together because our strengths combine to make better music.  Also it stops us going off on tangents because we have more brain to concentrate on what’s important. One of us can get lost in the detail and the other one can listen to it and say ‘hold on that is rubbish.’  This means approximately 87.3% less hassle for directors.*
